Theater at Les Granges

The program features two performances each evening, alternating among three plays: “Ruy Blas” by Victor Hugo “Monsieur de Pourceaugnac” by Molière “Arlequin, Servant of Two Masters” by Goldoni, adapted by Fiona Lévy Between the two performances, a light meal featuring local products will be served for a picnic at the foot of the mountains. Brief summary of each play: RUY BLAS by Victor Hugo (romantic drama, ages 8–10 and up): Don Salluste, a minister at the Spanish court, has just been publicly humiliated by the Queen. He seeks revenge and enlists Ruy Blas, his new valet, to set a trap for the Queen. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes ARLEQUIN, VALET DEUX MAÎTRES by Carlo Goldoni (comedy for ages 6–8 and up): While Mr. Pantalon is celebrating the engagement of his daughter Clarisse to Silvio, a stranger shows up at his house. His name is Arlequin, and he claims to be the valet of Mr. Federico Rasponi of Turin. Yet everyone knows that Federico Rasponi was murdered not long ago. But the valet insists that he is indeed there, in person, at Mr. Pantalon’s house, and that he has come to claim Clarisse, who had been promised to him. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes MONSIEUR DE POURCEAUGNAC by Molière (comedy for all ages): Julie is in love with Eraste. Unfortunately, her father, Oronte, has promised her to Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, a stranger who is due to arrive from Paris. Julie and Eraste, with the help of their friends, devise various schemes to trap Pourceaugnac, ridicule him, and discredit him in Oronte’s eyes in order to have the marriage called off.
