What to do with children, in winter?

Winter in the heart of the Lake Geneva mountains is a magical time of year!

With fresh snow, snow-covered forests and cosy chalets, there’s so much to discover.

Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of the winter season, whilst sharing unforgettable moments with your family.

An introduction to skiing and accessible winter sports

For children, there’s nothing quite like strapping on their skis in a safe area designed especially for them. Several resorts (Abondance, Bernex, La Chapelle d’Abondance, Thollon-les-Mémises) offer beginners’ areas and suitable slopes for stress-free fun.

It’s the perfect opportunity to share a first skiing experience in a peaceful setting with expert supervision.

Tip: remember to book children’s lessons or arrive early to avoid the crowds. A hot chocolate after the session will make the experience even more enjoyable!

And to ensure everyone can enjoy the pleasures of skiing, you can also try handiski, a supervised activity accessible to all. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the mountains in a fully inclusive way, in a safe and friendly environment.

Slide, laugh, try again: sledging, a winter must-do

If there’s one activity that appeals to all ages, it’s tobogganing! Simple, fun and accessible, it’s one of the great pleasures of the mountains, enjoyed in safe areas.

In Thollon-les-Mémises, the multi-activity run is situated close to the base of the slopes: ideal for enjoying run after run without having to walk too far. Whilst the little ones have fun, parents can admire the breathtaking view over Lake Geneva.

In Bernex, a specially designated sledge area awaits children at the foot of the slopes. The atmosphere is cheerful and friendly, often with a few ‘crêpes and hot chocolate’ breaks in between runs!

In the Abondance Valley, certain snow play areas also allow very young children to discover the joys of sliding in complete safety. You can even hire sledge runs on site, or find them in the villages’ sports shops.

For a change of pace, don’t miss the chance to try the ‘paret’, a small traditional wooden sledge. Easy to handle, it promises fun-filled runs for children of all ages. You can also try the ‘snooc’, the perfect blend of sledge and ski.

Our resorts also offer multi-activity slopes where different types of winter sports equipment share the snow in a friendly atmosphere. Perfect for a family day out full of laughter and thrills!

Dog sled rides

A highlight of the winter season, dog sledding is always a dream come true for children and parents alike!

This experience is available in La Chapelle d’Abondance, along beautiful routes in the heart of the valley.

Led by passionate professionals, it’s a gentle, immersive activity that respects the natural environment. A truly magical experience to share with the family.

Tip: remember to book in advance – trips sell out quickly during the holidays!

Go for a snowshoe walk

Snowshoe walks are the perfect way to introduce children to winter nature.

Discovering wildlife, animal tracks or even magical landscapes beneath a blanket of snow… what more could you ask for?

Our snowshoe guide is available for a nominal fee of €1 at our tourist information centres, to help you explore the region’s most beautiful routes and enjoy your outings in complete safety.

Guided walks are also available, so you can learn whilst having fun!

Winter in our mountains around Lake Geneva is a real adventure for the whole family. With winter sports, new discoveries, walks and quality time together, every day offers a fresh opportunity to delight young and old alike.

Whether it’s learning to ski, meeting the sled dogs or simply playing in the snow, our region offers countless ways to enjoy the winter season together.
