A walk starting from Ubine

The route begins in Ubine, where the very first steps take us straight back in time. As early as the 18th century, the mountain pasture was acquired by the neighbouring village of Vacheresse to feed its herds, a sign of the importance of these lands for local agriculture. Thanks to old maps drawn up during the Duchy of Savoy, we can now understand how these mountain pastures were organised, what was grown there and the scale of production at the time. These documents also help us to understand how agricultural practices have evolved.

Between Ubine and Autigny: a wild and unspoilt landscape

The walk then takes us towards the Col de la Plagne, a strategic pass offering breathtaking views over the Abondance valley and Mont Chauffé. The guides take the time to explain the formation of the soils and mountain ranges of the Chablais, resulting from the movement of tectonic plates. This landscape, shaped by time, tells an impressive geological story, intertwined with the history of the people who have lived there.

Life in the mountain pastures: past and present

The chalets at Autigny, the final destination of our walk, showcase the traditional architecture of the period. Contrary to popular belief, mountain pastures existed long before the arrival of the monk-settlers. This tour allows us to discover how life in the mountain pastures has evolved: in the past, a hard life centred on tending to livestock and crops; today, a setting for work and the preservation of heritage.

This walk is suitable for everyone and involves a moderate climb. Participants are invited to register at the tourist information offices in the Pays d’Évian – Vallée d’Abondance.
