Lugrin is one of the five largest municipalities in the Pays d’Évian, a hillside mountain village offering breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Geneva. Right from the start, François, a history enthusiast, draws us into a captivating account of the kings of Savoy and the churches that have left their mark on the area. The tour also explores the region’s geological history, explaining the influence of the Rhône Glacier and the formation of Lake Geneva.

Discovering traditional dwellings and landscapes

The village of Lugrin stretches out lengthwise, a feature linked to the way the land was organised to keep space free for livestock and crops. We visit the hamlet of Véron, formerly nicknamed ‘Little Paris’, where many Savoyards returned after working in the Paris region. The architecture here is distinctive, featuring iconic vaulted houses and traditional buildings. It was here that our interactions with the locals proved most enriching, with both permanent residents and owners of second homes sharing their own stories and anecdotes.

Hiking on the GR 5 and practical tips

For walkers, the GR 5 passes through Lugrin, offering the chance to explore the region along signposted trails. However, those who enjoy mountain walking should ensure they have a good pair of trainers, as the going can be steep at times!

A celebration of natural and culinary heritage

Lugrin is also renowned for its natural heritage. During our visit, we discovered the chestnut trees, the village’s iconic trees. Their nuts were once an essential source of food for the locals. And for lovers of local traditions, Lugrin’s famous kirsch, a renowned cherry spirit, is not to be missed.

This immersion in nature also had some culinary surprises in store for us! From tasting dishes made with nettles to learning how plants are used in natural poultices, the surrounding forests revealed their secrets. Every step was an invitation to discover how the locals live in harmony with their environment.

A highlight of the visit: meeting a professional fisherman from Lake Geneva. He told us about life on the lake, fishing for perch and féra – the lake’s iconic fish – whilst sharing his love for this age-old trade. A true return to our roots, helping us to understand the strong bonds between people and Lake Geneva.
