Among the most popular routes, the Évian–Lausanne crossing, operated by the Compagnie Générale de Navigation (CGN), offers a quick and scenic way to travel between the two shores. Here is a comprehensive guide to this crossing and other ways to explore the lake.

The Évian–Lausanne route 

This iconic route is served daily by CGN ferries, with the journey taking around 35 minutes on the express service. Ideal for both residents and tourists, it offers breathtaking views of the Alps and the shores of Lake Geneva. Services run regularly, particularly during the summer months, making it easy to enjoy day trips between Switzerland and France.

On board: Passengers can enjoy comfortable lounges and a panoramic deck from which to admire the scenery. Some crossings are made on historic steam boats, adding a touch of charm to the experience.

CGN’s regular routes:

  • Nyon – Yvoire: This route offers a charming journey between Nyon, in Switzerland, and Yvoire, the medieval village in France. The crossing takes around 20 minutes and is ideal for discovering the history and natural beauty of the area.
  • Geneva – Montreux: A longer cruise linking Geneva to Montreux, allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of the lake’s shores, including iconic landmarks such as Chillon Castle. This cruise offers a complete immersion in the diversity of the landscapes.
  • Thonon-les-Bains – Lausanne: A convenient and quick crossing linking Thonon-les-Bains to Lausanne in around 30 minutes, ideal for commuting or a day trip. The service runs regularly and is well suited to commuters.
  • Montreux – Château de Chillon: This short cruise, perfect for tourists, takes you from Montreux to Château de Chillon, one of the region’s most iconic sites.

Things to do around the jetties:

  • In Nyon: Discover Nyon Castle and explore the charming local museums.
  • In Montreux: Stroll along the quays, visit the Montreux Jazz Café or explore the local markets.
  • In Geneva: Enjoy the Jardin Anglais, admire the Jet d’Eau and explore the shops in the city centre.
  • In Thonon-les-Bains: Discover the Châtaigneraie Gardens and sample local specialities by the lake.
  • In Lausanne: Visit the Olympic Museum, take a stroll along the lakeside at Ouchy, or explore the historic centre.
