GR5: where to start the Great Alpine Crossing?

The GR5 links Rotterdam, the port city of the Netherlands, and Nice, the capital of the Alpes Maritimes. Here, we’ll be concentrating on the “Grande Traversée des Alpes” section, focusing in particular on the first few days of the crossing, during which you’ll cross the Chablais massif and gaze out over Lake Geneva.

If you’re a fan of backpacking, no doubt you’ve already heard of the GR5! One of Europe’s most emblematic crossings. As you follow this legendary trail, you’ll pass through several of our villages, giving you the perfect opportunity to visit Saint-Gingolph or La Chapelle d’Abondance.

The route starts in Saint-Gingolph, on the shores of Lake Geneva, and continues through the mountains towards La Chapelle d’Abondance, passing through Bernex and Vacheresse.

Take the opportunity to admire the Dent d’Oche and the beauty of Europe’s largest lake.

1. Saint-Gingolph, starting point of the GR5

The Grande Traversée des Alpes starts in Saint-Gingolph, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Straddling the Haute-Savoie and Valais regions of Switzerland, Saint-Gingolph has both French and Swiss nationalities. Before setting off on your walk, we recommend that you take a moment to enjoy the gentle waters of the lake.

From Saint-Gingolph, head up towards the mountains to Novel, the smallest village in Haute-Savoie.

Take a break in the heart of the wild mountains, as far as the Abondance valley

Make sure you’re well prepared when you leave Saint-Gingolph, as there’s a big climb (1636m) ahead of you on the way to the Col de Bise in the Abondance valley. You can also make a diversion to the Bise refuge for a bite to eat or to spend the night.

During this stage, you’ll enjoy exceptional views of the Chablais mountains, and you’ll gradually see Lake Geneva receding into the distance as you plunge deeper into the heart of the Alpine valleys.

2. From Bise to the Trébentaz refuge

After your first stage in the Chablais mountains, and a well-earned break in the Bise sector, it’s time to move on to the next stage of your trek!

This second stage will take you through the wonderful landscapes of the Abondance valley. From Bise, head for the Mont de Grange reserve, one of the region’s iconic peaks. You can stop off at the Trébentaz refuge before continuing on towards the Morzine valley and then the Giffre.
